The Tana River Delta (TRD) in Kenya is one of the most important wetlands in Africa supporting a vast array of flora and fauna along with the livelihoods of thousands of the local people. The TRD measures about 130,000 ha with rich mosaic of palm savannah, seasonally flooded grassland, swamps, riverine forest fragments, lakes, woodlands, mangroves, sand dunes and the Tana River itself. The delta provides a refuge for 350 species of birds, including the globally-threatened Basra reed warbler and the Malindi pipit, along with internationally-important populations of 22 waterbird species. It is also home to two endemic primates, the endangered Tana River Colobus and the Tana River Crested Mangabey, as well as providing an important wildlife dispersal area for elephants and other big game from Tsavo National Park. In fact, TRD have gained international recognition on several fronts. It has been enlisted as a Ramsar site for being a wetland of international importance, as an Important Bird Area for hosting unique birds species and as a Key Biodiversity Area because of the diversity of plants and animals found there.

Old Bonjoge Forest Block also known as Kaptumek / Kajulu is part of South Nandi KFS Forest Station a gazetted public forest in Kenya under the management of Kenya Forest Service. The Forest was initially a human settlement till 1983 when the then President Daniel Moi advised the people to relocate to Bonjoge area to give room for a game park to develop hence curbing the issue of encroachment. The park / forest was then put under the management of Kenya Wildlife Service(KWS), Kenya Forest Service(KFS),County Council of Nandi and the entire Bonjoge community under an MoU that was reached. In 1994, the park was converted into a Forest reserve by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) through a gazette notice No. 371. The forest which measures 2,250 hectares has been poorly managed since 1983 leading to complete deforestation, invasion by Lantana camara an invasive plant species and mushrooming of illegal Cannabis sativa farms. Most of the forest is now completely degraded with bare rocks and massive soil erosion.
- Lack of capacity building, awareness creation and training for the forest adjacent communities
- Illegal farming activities because of the remoteness and tough terrain of the forest
- Illegal burning of charcoal and raw wood fuel
- Brewing of illicit alcohol and illegal growing of bhang
- Illegal grazing and overgrazing
- Over exploitation of dominant medicinal trees
- Unlimited entry and exit through the forest and illegal routes
Old Bonjoge forest is the primary source of clean drinking water for Kisumu City, the third largest city in Kenya with a population of 397,957. In addition, Old Bonjoge Forest is the only forest around the city and the “lungs” for the rapidly growing metropolitan. With the complete deforestation of the forest Kisumu will have no carbon sink and chances of acute water shortage will be more of a norm than an exception.
Type of Restoration Needed: Full reforestation and removal of Lantana camara
Planting Site Size and Planting Capacity: Completely deforested areas: 2,250 Hectares (4,800,000 Indigenous trees) and 480,000 agroforestry / fruit trees and bamboo.
Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It is also the source of river Nile, the longest 6,650 kilometers. Most of the rivers draining into Lake Victoria are in Kenya or originate from Kenya. These include rivers Nzoia, Yala, Sondu, the world famous Mara river, Nyando etc. Five Counties in Kenya surround Lake Victoria, Kisumu County, Siaya County, Busia County, Homabay County and Migori County. These counties have less than 1% forest cover yet they surround a world famous lake and a world famous river source. Partner with us to reforest public forests in the lake basin. There is more than 20,000 hectares of available forest land that requires reforestation, enrichment planting and protection from forest fires.
Kenya's last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once stretched the continent and the only remaining tropical rainforest in Kenya globally known for its beautiful and bountiful butterflies. The forest is in urgent need of attention and reintroduction of wild animals that once teemed the area. The colobus monkey is endangered in its natural habitat with tales of gorillas having been spotted in the forest until the 80s. Snake species including the Gold Cobra and the Kaimosi Blind Snake are rarely seen today and believed to be almost extinct. Karibu sana as we save parts of Kakamega Forest that are degraded and in the process offer Decent Wages for Decent Lives to the surrounding communities.
